Scunthorpe United secured a decisive 3-1 victory over Boston United in a Lincolnshire derby at Pilgrim Way on Sunday, with two former Boston players among the scorers. The win, marked by key contributions from ex-Boston personnel, extended Boston’s run of poor form at home.
The match’s opening goal came in the 12th minute when Nicholas Pozo was fouled by Boston’s Jordan Richards, last season’s Player of the Year. From the resulting free kick, Dan Batty struck a 25-yard shot that took a deflection off a defender, beating Boston goalkeeper Louis Chadwick and giving Scunthorpe an early lead.
Boston’s goalkeeper Chadwick kept his team in the contest with a critical save shortly after, denying Jean Belehouan from close range following a cross by Will Evans. Despite Chadwick’s effort, Scunthorpe doubled their lead just before halftime. James Gale, another former Boston player, capitalized on a loose ball in the penalty area and scored to put the visitors 2-0 ahead going into the break.
In the second half, substitutes Ken Aboh and Lenell John-Lewis combined well from a corner, with Evans’ header forcing a strong save from Chadwick. However, Scunthorpe’s attacking pressure continued, and on the 70th minute, Belehouan scored his second goal of the game. He was quickest to react to a rebound after Evans’ header was initially saved by Chadwick, extending Scunthorpe's lead to 3-0.
Boston managed a late consolation when John-Lewis scored in the closing stages, but it was not enough to alter the result. The match also featured an off-pitch incident, with a “Butler Out” banner—referencing Boston’s manager—displayed in the away end before kickoff, a sign of growing fan frustration. The banner had disappeared well before the final whistle.
The defeat marked Boston’s ninth loss in their last 11 matches at Pilgrim Way, with the team conceding 17 goals across their fixtures in October alone. Manager Paul Hurst’s side faces mounting pressure as their dismal home form continues to hinder their campaign.
