The Ministry of Islamic Affairs in Kuwait has joined the national "Waffer" campaign aimed at promoting efficient use of electricity and water. The initiative, launched by the Ministry of Electricity, Water and Renewable Energy, forms part of a broader government effort to conserve essential national resources.
Acting Undersecretary Dr. Eng. Suleiman Al-Suwailem emphasized the ministry’s collaboration with other government agencies to increase public awareness about the importance of rationalizing electricity and water consumption. Speaking to officials, Al-Suwailem highlighted the ministry’s role in disseminating conservation messages through its media channels and dedicating Friday sermons to underscore the values of moderation and waste avoidance based on Islamic teachings.
In addition to outreach activities, the ministry has implemented practical measures to reduce resource use in mosques under its supervision. These include installing energy-efficient lighting systems, turning off water heaters during the summer, and ensuring that lights and electrical devices are switched off in unused spaces. He also noted that in mosques with low attendance and good ventilation, prayers are restricted to designated prayer areas to minimize electricity consumption.
Lighting management is carefully timed to align with prayer schedules. Exterior lights are activated at the Maghrib call to prayer and switched off 30 minutes after the Isha prayer. Similarly, lighting is turned on at the first Fajr call to prayer and turned off half an hour following dawn prayers. To further conserve water, the ministry is installing approved water-saving devices on ablution taps.
Al-Suwailem stated that these steps reflect the Ministry of Islamic Affairs’ commitment to supporting national efforts designed to enhance the efficiency of electricity and water use, conserve natural resources, and promote a culture of sustainability across all its facilities.
