New York Islanders general manager Mathieu Darche provided an update on Mat Barzal’s recovery from left knee issues that have delayed his start to the 2026-27 season. Although a definitive timeline for Barzal’s return remains uncertain, Darche said medical professionals are now comfortable with moving the player to the next phase of his rehabilitation.
Barzal, who missed training camp due to inflammation in his left knee, has been skating independently for several weeks. Darche confirmed that the initial inflammation has subsided, clearing the way for Barzal to gradually increase his on-ice activity. “There’s no setbacks. Nothing happened, no procedure. Since training camp, nothing has come up,” Darche said.
While Barzal’s progress is steady, the general manager emphasized that the player’s comfort and strength levels remain central to the recovery timeline. “We feel the inflammation is down, but we’re still working on getting his strength back and how comfortable he feels,” Darche added. He also noted that Barzal has yet to join full team practices and that any decision on advancing to contact training sessions will involve close collaboration between the team’s medical staff and Barzal himself.
The injury relates to a left kneecap fracture Barzal sustained two years ago, which required surgical repair. Despite ongoing management of the knee, Barzal played in 81 games last season. Darche said there are currently no plans for additional medical procedures but acknowledged that the situation will be reassessed if necessary. “If it doesn’t get better, you’re always looking at where we think he can be. We don’t believe [that’s necessary] right now,” he explained.
The Islanders could benefit from Barzal’s offensive contributions, especially as they navigate the season without forwards Calum Ritchie and Matias Maccelli. At 5-3-1 entering their home game against the Los Angeles Kings, the team has performed well defensively under coach Pete DeBoer despite Barzal’s absence.
Looking ahead, Darche indicated that Barzal might join the team on an upcoming road trip, which could facilitate his return to practice in a noncontact jersey before full participation and eventual game action. “We both work together,” Darche said, referring to the relationship between the player, medical staff, and management. “The doctors would be comfortable for him to ramp up whenever he’s ready. It’s not necessarily all him or all us making the decision. We’re trying to work together on this. But, of course, he has a big say. It’s his body. He knows how he feels.”
