Israel announced on Monday that it would impose a lockdown across the occupied West Bank during Tuesday’s parliamentary election, amid ongoing military operations triggered by a recent deadly attack. Palestinian workers will be prohibited from entering Israeli settlements and the Jordan Valley on Sunday and Monday, with limited exceptions for industrial zones and a restricted number of approved areas, according to the Israeli military.

The security measures follow an attack on Friday near the city of Hebron in which two Israeli soldiers were killed and three others wounded. Israeli forces killed the two Palestinian suspects involved, both from Hebron. In response, the Israeli Defence Minister Israel Katz confirmed that approximately 2,000 Palestinians have been displaced from their homes in Hebron as military operations continue.

“Selected army units are currently operating there,” Katz said during an interview with Israeli broadcaster Kan. He added that displaced residents would be prevented from returning to their neighborhoods “until we have resolved all the problems with Hamas in Hebron.” Hebron Mayor Yousef al-Jabari provided a similar estimate, stating to Al Jazeera that around 2,200 people had been forced from their homes since Israeli raids began on Friday.

The Israeli military reported conducting counter-terrorism operations in roughly 40 areas and 400 locations across the West Bank. These actions involved coordinated efforts by ground forces, border police, and intelligence units, leading to the arrest of approximately 40 suspects, including members of Islamist groups Hamas and Islamic Jihad.

In light of the security situation, Israel’s political leadership accepted recommendations from the security establishment to bar Palestinian workers from entering Israeli settlements and industrial zones throughout the West Bank and Jordan Valley during the election on Tuesday. Additionally, the military stated that all land crossings between the West Bank and Israel would be closed to Palestinians on election day. These measures aim to enhance security amid heightened tensions in the region.
