Israeli airstrikes in southern Lebanon on Saturday resulted in the deaths of six people despite a ceasefire that was recently extended in the ongoing conflict between Israel and Hezbollah. Lebanon’s Health Ministry reported that two strikes targeted a truck and a motorbike in the town of Yohmor Al-Shaqeef, Nabatieh district, killing four individuals. A subsequent airstrike on Safad Al-Battikh, in the Bint Jbeil district, caused two fatalities and injured 17 others.

The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) stated that the operations targeted armed Hezbollah members. According to the Israeli military, four Hezbollah operatives were killed on Saturday: three in a vehicle loaded with weapons and another on a motorcycle, with two additional armed members neutralized in other locations. The IDF also reported intercepting two projectiles launched from Lebanon, which it described as a violation of the ceasefire agreement, and intercepted a “suspicious aerial target.” Hezbollah, meanwhile, claimed to have targeted an Israeli army vehicle within southern Lebanon.

The current ceasefire, initially announced by US President Donald Trump on April 17 for ten days, was extended for an additional three weeks as of Thursday. Despite this, a Hezbollah lawmaker expressed skepticism about the ceasefire’s effectiveness, calling it “meaningless” shortly after its extension.

A recent United Nations human rights report highlighted the severe impact of the conflict on civilians in Lebanon during the first three weeks of hostilities in early March. The report documented widespread casualties, displacement, and damage to civilian infrastructure. It further accused Israeli military operations of directly targeting civilians, including medical personnel, and demolishing multistory residential buildings that resulted in entire families being killed. The report suggested these acts could constitute serious violations of international humanitarian law.

While Israel maintains its strikes are aimed at militant targets, Lebanon and international observers continue to express concern over the humanitarian toll of the fighting. The tension persists amid ongoing hostilities and challenges in enforcing the ceasefire across the region.
