A former foreign correspondent has outlined a comprehensive blueprint for what he describes as a necessary “national salvation” for Israel, warning that the country faces a critical juncture that demands urgent and sweeping reforms. Drawing on his experience reporting from post-communist Romania, Dan Perry argues that Israel’s political, social, and security challenges risk pushing it towards instability unless decisive action is taken.

Perry’s analysis comes ahead of Israel’s upcoming elections in October. He cautions that if Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s coalition retains power, the country could be steered toward catastrophe. Conversely, if the opposition prevails, it will inherit a fractured state marked by institutional weaknesses, international isolation, and deep societal divisions—conditions that require an extraordinary national response.

Central to Perry’s proposal is the creation of a “National Salvation Front” tasked with addressing Israel’s most pressing issues through a dozen immediate measures. These include restoring accountability and democratic norms by establishing an impartial state commission to investigate the October 7 events, repealing recent judicial reforms he claims undermine the independence of courts and legal authorities, and reaffirming the rule of law for all citizens and officials.

On the security and diplomatic front, Perry urges Israel to embrace the Trump Gaza plan fully, committing to the disarmament of Hamas, cooperating with international stabilization efforts, and assisting in Gaza’s reconstruction alongside Arab states and global donors. He calls for a freeze on settlement expansion beyond the security barrier to preserve the possibility of future territorial compromises and halt policies that exacerbate isolation and conflict.

Perry also stresses the need to confront internal violence, particularly by ending the implicit immunity of Jewish extremists involved in attacks against Palestinians, and instructing the Israel Defense Forces to protect all civilians without exception. He recommends investing in improved relations with neighboring countries, including Lebanon and Syria, offering non-aggression agreements and exploring diplomatic engagement to reduce regional tensions.

Domestically, Perry highlights serious structural challenges, such as high crime rates within Arab communities, inequities in municipal funding, and significant educational gaps across the population. He calls for enhanced policing against organized crime, guaranteed equality under the law, equitable resource allocation, and a nationwide education overhaul emphasizing core subjects like mathematics, science, English, and civics. Schools, including those in haredi and Arab sectors, would be required to meet standardized curricula as a condition for funding.

Perry advocates revising social welfare policies by phasing out child allowances beyond the third child and cutting budget allocations to ultra-Orthodox institutions, while simultaneously creating programs to integrate haredi and Arab populations into mainstream education, vocational training, and service opportunities. He proposes introducing a universal military or national service obligation, removing religious exemptions for able-bodied individuals, and enforcing penalties for those evading conscription.

Economic development priorities should shift away from isolated settlements towards infrastructure, healthcare, housing, and transportation investments in Israel’s Negev and Galilee regions. Perry envisions these areas becoming a focus for growth through improved connectivity, tax incentives, and strengthened industry.

Finally, Perry calls for amending Israel’s Basic Law to prevent individuals facing serious corruption indictments from forming a government, aiming to reinforce democratic integrity.

He warns that without these reforms, Israel risks becoming increasingly isolated, economically weakened, and socially fragmented, undermining its global alliances and potentially threatening its survival as a democratic state by 2048. However, Perry expresses cautious optimism that with determined leadership and unified purpose, Israel can navigate its current crises and preserve the nation’s future.
