Israeli authorities announced on Sunday that they had arrested a Palestinian man suspected of fatally shooting an Israeli settler in the West Bank. The incident occurred near a natural spring close to the Israeli settlement of Neve Tzuf, about 12 miles north of Jerusalem. The victim was identified by a local settler council as Netanel Shakrun, a father of six who was reportedly at the spring for a ritual bath ahead of the Yom Kippur holiday, which began Sunday evening.
According to Israeli military statements, soldiers apprehended the suspect at the scene after a soldier wounded him, and he was later detained at a hospital in the nearby Palestinian city of Ramallah. Palestinian sources reported that Israeli forces raided the H-Clinic Specialized Hospital in Ramallah to detain the injured Palestinian. Witnesses said troops fired tear gas near the hospital, causing several people to suffer from tear gas inhalation.
In response to the attack, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu ordered security agencies to strengthen their presence in the West Bank, enforce curfews, carry out further arrests, and demolish the house of the alleged assailant as soon as possible.
The shooting comes amid a wider escalation of violence in the West Bank following Hamas’ October 7, 2023, attack on southern Israel and the subsequent Gaza conflict. Israeli forces have conducted extensive military operations across the territory, including raids, arrests, demolitions, and restrictions on movement. Israeli settlers have also been involved in a series of assaults targeting Palestinian communities, contributing to ongoing tensions.
According to the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA), from the start of 2026 through late August, 79 Palestinians, including 19 children, had been killed in the West Bank by Israeli forces or settlers. Over 1,800 Palestinians were injured during this period, with about 23 deaths and more than 1,040 injuries attributed to settler violence. Palestinian armed groups have also carried out a smaller number of deadly attacks against Israelis in the West Bank in recent years.
On the same day as the shooting, local sources reported that Israeli forces opened fire on a vehicle near Haddad Tourist Village, east of Jenin, killing a Palestinian youth and injuring another person. The victim’s body was reportedly withheld by the authorities, and emergency responders were prevented from accessing the scene to provide medical aid.
The recent surge in violence has drawn international criticism. Western governments have condemned settler attacks on Palestinians, with some countries imposing economic restrictions on West Bank settlements. British Foreign Secretary Ed Miliband described settler actions as “ethnic cleansing,” while the U.S. ambassador to Israel called the assailants “terrorists” and urged Israeli authorities to respond forcefully.
Supporters of Prime Minister Netanyahu’s government argue that the increased military presence has helped limit attacks against Israelis, pointing to the lower number of Israeli casualties compared to previous years. Critics, however, warn that the tightening Israeli security measures and weakening of the Palestinian Authority may fuel further unrest and potentially lead to a larger uprising.
