An Israeli airstrike on Saturday killed Brigadier-General Abdel-Nasser Al-Maqadma, the head of the Hamas-led police force and governor of the northern Gaza Strip, according to the Hamas-run interior ministry and medical sources. The strike targeted the Sheikh Radwan area north of Gaza City.
In a separate incident, an Israeli attack in the Nuseirat refugee camp in central Gaza killed a Palestinian medic, Gaza medical officials reported. Additionally, a police officer who had been wounded in an Israeli airstrike last week died on Saturday, bringing the day's death toll to at least four. Medics also confirmed that two people were killed in a house in Khan Younis, southern Gaza, as a result of another Israeli strike.
The Israeli military did not immediately respond to requests for comment on these incidents.
Israel has carried out numerous strikes targeting members of the Hamas-led police force in recent months, including senior officials. Israeli authorities maintain that many of those targeted are affiliated with Hamas’s armed wing and pose imminent threats to Israeli security and troops operating within Gaza.
Hamas has condemned the attacks on its police force and their headquarters, describing them as efforts to create chaos and undermine the ceasefire agreement brokered by the United States in October 2025. Despite the truce, which paused full-scale hostilities, Israeli airstrikes have continued nearly daily.
Since the October ceasefire took effect, Gaza health officials report that Israeli strikes have killed more than 1,180 Palestinians, mostly civilians. In the same period, Palestinian militants have killed four Israeli soldiers. Hamas typically does not disclose casualty figures among its ranks.
Efforts by mediators—including Egypt, Qatar, Turkey, and the United States—to advance a peace plan put forward by U.S. President Donald Trump, which includes demands for Hamas disarmament and Israeli troop withdrawals, have made little visible progress.
The current conflict traces back to a large-scale attack by Hamas fighters on southern Israel in 2023, which resulted in approximately 1,200 Israeli deaths and the taking of around 250 hostages, according to Israeli sources. In response, Israel launched a military offensive that Gaza health officials say has killed more than 73,000 Palestinians and left much of the Gaza Strip devastated.
Israel now controls an estimated 64 percent of the densely populated coastal enclave, home to nearly two million Palestinians. Most residents live in severely damaged buildings or makeshift shelters under Hamas control, facing dire humanitarian conditions amid ongoing violence.
