The son of Israel’s ambassador to the United States was critically injured after a Palestinian man rammed his vehicle into a military checkpoint in the West Bank, Israeli authorities said Wednesday. The attack took place at a security checkpoint northwest of Jerusalem, an area that has seen a recent escalation in violence.

According to the Israeli military, the assailant was shot and killed at the scene. Palestinian authorities identified the attacker as Mahmoud Suleiman, 29, and confirmed his death but did not specify whether he was responsible for the checkpoint incident.

The injured individual, identified as 39-year-old Neria Leiter, a reserve soldier, was hospitalized at Shaare Zedek Medical Center in Jerusalem. Neria is the son of Yechiel Leiter, Israel's ambassador to the United States. In a video statement from the hospital, Yechiel Leiter said his son's condition was critical and that his life was "hanging in the balance." Hospital officials later described Neria Leiter's condition as stable but cautioned that his life remained at risk.

Neria Leiter’s family has recently endured tragedy; his brother, Moshe Leiter, who served as a reservist in an elite naval unit, was killed during the early stages of the ongoing conflict in Gaza following the Hamas-led attacks that began on October 7, 2023.

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu visited Shaare Zedek Medical Center to see Neria Leiter before leaving for the United Nations General Assembly in New York. The visit underscored the incident's significance amid heightened tensions in the region.
