Israeli air and gunfire strikes killed at least four people in the Gaza Strip on Sunday, according to health officials in the territory. The incidents occurred in separate locations across Gaza, including Gaza City, Khan Younis, Nuseirat refugee camp, and near Jabalia refugee camp.
In Gaza City, a strike targeted a car, resulting in the death of at least one person. Initial reports had indicated two fatalities, but health officials later confirmed one death. Emergency responders were seen spraying the burning vehicle to extinguish the fire. Elsewhere, a Palestinian man riding a bicycle was killed in Khan Younis, located in southern Gaza, while a man died near Nuseirat refugee camp in central Gaza. Additionally, a woman was fatally shot near the Jabalia refugee camp in the northern part of the enclave.
The Israeli military stated it had carried out strikes targeting Hamas operatives in Khan Younis, Nuseirat, and Gaza City but said it was unaware of any incident involving gunfire in Jabalia. Israeli authorities have escalated operations against Hamas in recent weeks, citing concerns that the group has been rearming and conducting attacks in breach of a year-old ceasefire agreement.
Hamas, on the other hand, denies attempts to rearm or launch attacks and accuses Israel of undermining the ceasefire. The current truce, brokered by the United States last year, was intended to pave the way for Gaza’s reconstruction. However, progress has stalled as negotiations have repeatedly faltered over conditions related to disarmament by Hamas and the withdrawal of Israeli forces.
Since the ceasefire’s implementation, Gaza’s health officials report that at least 1,500 Palestinians have died amid ongoing Israeli air strikes. Israel reports the deaths of four of its soldiers during this period. Following the outbreak of hostilities on October 7, 2023—when Hamas-led militants killed approximately 1,200 people in southern Israel—Palestinian authorities state that over 74,000 people have been killed in what they describe as Israel’s ongoing assault on Gaza.
