Israeli broadcasters have launched an extensive slate of programs marking the third anniversary of the Hamas attack on October 7, 2023. The commemorations, which include documentaries, special reports, and digital projects, aim to revisit the events of that day while exploring the ongoing impact on survivors, families of victims, soldiers, and affected communities.
Unlike immediate post-attack documentaries, which often relied on hurriedly compiled footage to document the attack itself, the current programming reflects years of follow-up work. Filmmakers have since been able to track the long-term aftermath, focusing on themes of survival, trauma, memory, and resilience.
Public broadcaster KAN is airing several notable productions. One documentary, "The Shift" (HaMishmeret), directed by Chen Liberman and Roni Singer, presents the experience inside Soroka Medical Center in Beersheba on October 7, when the hospital received hundreds of casualties amid a developing medical emergency. The film features previously unreleased security footage that captures the hospital’s response during the initial hours of the attack.
KAN News is also broadcasting "After They Returned," a three-part series by anchor Tali Moreno that centers on families after hostages have come home, addressing the complex process of reintegration and healing following captivity. Another program, "Taboo," directed by Hanoch Daum, reunites four former hostages for candid discussions about survival, hope, and the challenges faced after release. The film includes elements of dark humor within its reflective narrative.
In addition, KAN will air "His Footprints Remained," a documentary about Ibrahim Kharouba, a Bedouin IDF tracker killed while defending soldiers at Nahal Oz during the attack. Complementing these broadcasts is KAN’s digital memorial project "7.10.360," which offers an interactive timeline and detailed reconstruction of events along the Gaza border, featuring hundreds of personal stories sourced from extensive archival materials.
Commercial broadcaster HOT 8 is also contributing a variety of original and previously aired content. Aviad Livny’s "Saved by the Ball" depicts the story of the Kfar Aza Foxes soccer team, who resumed playing shortly after evacuating their community in the wake of the attack. The team’s return to the field provided a brief respite amid grief, though they declined to participate in a wider tournament in summer 2024, stating they would not play “until everyone comes back.”
Another HOT 8 documentary, "Whose Are You?" by Dotan Naveh, explores the experiences of women who married into the close-knit Kfar Aza kibbutz and the uncertainties they faced during and after October 7. The channel will also present "You Don’t Bury a Soul," focusing on 13 bereaved parents traveling through southern India as they confront their grief and questions of memory.
HOT 8’s programming further includes a collection of short films by young western Negev filmmakers, and rebroadcasts of award-winning documentaries such as Yariv Mozer’s "We Will Dance Again" and Tom Shoval’s "A Letter to David," the latter detailing a family torn apart by kidnapping during the attack.
Broadcasts will also cover the broader ramifications of the conflict. "The Campaign: Disinformation in a Time of War," airing October 4 on HOT 8, examines information warfare and digital propaganda surrounding the Israel-Hamas conflict.
On the Yes Docu channel, two new films focus on reservists grappling with the psychological toll following October 7. "Good Morning Gaza," directed by Hanan Brandes and Matan Sacofsky and premiering October 4, offers an intimate look at soldiers’ experiences through radio broadcasts and combat footage. Immediately following, "One Eye Open" by Tom Giat, winner of the Docaviv 2026 First Film Award, documents the mental health crisis among reservists during Operation Iron Swords.
These commemorative projects provide both a detailed account of the events and a broader reflection on the war’s enduring human consequences. As of press time, Cellcom TV and Keshet had yet to announce commemorative programming related to the anniversary.
