Lebanese President Joseph Aoun has condemned what he described as violations by Israel of the terms outlined in a framework agreement signed during negotiations held in Washington. Speaking during a meeting with United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights Volker Turk in Beirut, Aoun emphasized Lebanon’s commitment to implementing the framework while rejecting what he called persistent breaches by Israel.

Aoun expressed concern that ongoing Israeli military operations, including home and village demolitions in southern occupied areas, undermine the effectiveness of the agreement. He characterized these actions as direct violations of human rights and international law, urging the global community to intervene and prevent Israel from continuing what he described as a destructive campaign similar to its operations previously conducted in Gaza.

The Lebanese president also noted that the ongoing conflict has impeded Lebanon’s progress toward necessary reforms but affirmed the government remains dedicated to pursuing further changes, stressing that these efforts are driven by national priorities rather than international pressure.

In response, Turk acknowledged the United Nations’ close monitoring of the situation in Lebanon, particularly the Israeli military activities that have persisted since March 2. The UN official indicated that a comprehensive report on human rights violations is underway and reaffirmed the agency’s ongoing commitment to providing Lebanon with essential support.

The framework agreement referenced by Aoun and Turk encompasses a range of measures, including security arrangements, the disarmament of armed groups, redeployment of the Lebanese military, and the reconstruction of areas affected by conflict with the backing of international assistance. Both leaders highlighted the importance of adhering to these terms to ensure stability and progress in the region.
