Attendances in the Isthmian League have risen by more than 20 percent compared to the same period last season, reflecting renewed interest in non-league football competitions. The increase is most pronounced in the Step 4 South East division, which recorded nearly a 55 percent rise in spectators during the opening two months of the 2026-27 season.
Every division within the league has experienced notable attendance growth. The Step 3 Premier division, which continues to draw the largest crowds overall, has seen attendance figures climb by almost four percent, with close to 64,000 fans attending matches since the start of the campaign. Step 4’s North and South Central divisions both reported robust increases as well, each up around 37 percent.
Nick Robinson, chairman of the Isthmian League, attributed the surge in attendance not only to the improving quality of football but also to the strong ties clubs maintain with their local communities. He pointed to several significant victories over higher-tier opponents in this season’s FA Cup and FA Trophy competitions, including those by Cray Wanderers, Wingate & Finchley, Crowborough Athletic, Hastings United, AFC Stoneham, Egham Town, Gorleston, Cambridge City, and Takeley, as examples of the competitive standard fueling fan interest.
Robinson highlighted efforts beyond the pitch that contribute to attracting larger crowds. Many clubs engage with their communities through regular programming, including holiday schemes and charitable initiatives. These activities, he said, help strengthen local support and bring in new attendees, complementing the steady growth in crowds seen since the COVID-19 pandemic.
Among individual fixtures, Dulwich Hamlet’s home ground, Champion Hill, continues to generate some of the highest attendance figures across the league, securing four of the top 20 matches for crowd size so far this season. Joining them in the top attendance charts are Lewes, whose match against Eastbourne Borough drew 2,112 spectators—the season’s highest—and Whitstable Town, which hosted Margate in front of 1,873 fans, recording the third-largest attendance of the campaign.
Looking ahead, Robinson expressed optimism about sustained fan engagement, pointing to marquee fixtures and a Non-League Day weekend planned for Easter 2027 as opportunities to maintain momentum. He encouraged local supporters to continue backing their teams, emphasizing the entertainment value and community benefits that their attendance helps support.
