International Standard University (ISU), located in Dhaka, Bangladesh, is equipping textile engineering students with the skills and experience necessary to meet the demands of the nation’s growing garment industry. Established in 2018 under the Private University Act of 2010, ISU aims to bridge the gap between academia and industry by providing modern facilities, hands-on training, and strong links to textile enterprises.
Textile engineering remains one of the most sought-after disciplines within Bangladesh’s job market, driven by a burgeoning garment sector that requires professionals across technical, managerial, buying, merchandising, and teaching roles. Despite the abundance of private universities offering textile programs, many students struggle to acquire the practical skills demanded by employers. ISU has positioned itself to address this challenge by offering an industry-oriented curriculum supported by modern laboratories and close connections to manufacturing and processing units within the Standard Group—the country’s leading garment exporter and ISU’s founding body.
ISU’s leadership includes Chairman Engr. A.K.M. Mosharraf Hussain and Vice-Chairman Engr. Md. Atiqur Rahman, whose involvement connects the university closely to the textile and garment industries. Professor Dr. Abdul Awal Khan, the Vice-Chancellor, underscores the importance of employment prospects for graduates and highlights the university’s collaboration with 19 textile-related businesses under Standard Group. This collaboration allows students to gain practical experience and develop skills through direct industry exposure, reinforcing a university–industry linkage model intended to produce graduates ready to contribute both domestically and internationally.
The Department of Textile Engineering is chaired by Prof. Md. Abul Kashem, former Vice-Chancellor of Bangladesh University of Textiles (BUTEX), who emphasizes the critical role of young engineers in driving technological advancement in Bangladesh’s textile sector. According to Prof. Kashem, ISU’s focus on integrating theory with industry experience aims to cultivate technically proficient graduates who will support the country’s vision of becoming a “Smart Bangladesh.”
Students report benefiting from a comprehensive learning environment that combines skilled faculty, up-to-date laboratories, a well-stocked library, and regular industry visits. These opportunities, along with seminars and workshops featuring textile industry professionals, help students align their academic knowledge with current market trends and future prospects.
ISU’s Mohakhali campus in Dhaka offers modern infrastructure including air-conditioned classrooms with multimedia technologies, secure Wi-Fi access, a digital library, and separate hostels for male and female students. The university follows an Outcome-Based Education curriculum approved by the University Grants Commission (UGC) and staffed by faculty members with qualifications from reputed domestic and international institutions.
In addition to the Department of Textile Engineering, ISU comprises eight departments across five faculties providing programs in business, engineering, humanities, advanced sciences, and public health. The university also offers various scholarships and tuition waivers based on merit and eligibility criteria, aiming to support students from diverse backgrounds.
By aligning its academic programs with industry requirements and promoting hands-on experience among students, ISU seeks to cultivate a new generation of textile engineers equipped to contribute to Bangladesh’s expanding garment industry and broader economic development.
