Corey Sutherland overcame significant physical challenges to guide Naturally Lit to a surprise victory in the $200,000 3YO Handicap (1000m) at Corbould Park on Saturday. The 21-year-old jockey, who had to reduce his weight to 54 kilograms to meet the race requirements, had foreseen the upset despite the longshot’s $41 odds.

Standing at 185 centimeters, Sutherland naturally carries more weight than is typical for a sprinter’s jockey. Following an offer from trainer Shaun Dwyer to ride Naturally Lit, Sutherland committed to a demanding week of weight loss and skipped two race meetings to prepare. “When Shaun said I can ride him in a quality race worth a lot of money, I said ‘Of course’, and my next concern was the weight,” Sutherland said. “It’s been a long, draining week, but he’s worth it.”

In the lead-up to the race, Sutherland rode the horse in trackwork sessions on both Friday and Saturday. Entering race day, he felt the horse was primed for success. “I came back in and said to Shaun, ‘I wish we had drawn a barrier because this horse is ready to win,’” he recalled.

Dwyer’s strategy focused on securing cover during the race and positioning Naturally Lit in the optimal part of the track before allowing the horse to accelerate. The tactic proved successful as Naturally Lit surged past strong contenders to claim the win. The horse held off runners Spirit Of Barty, trained by Tony Gollan and offered at $71 odds, and Foreign Press, who started at $6.50.

The victory marked a notable achievement for both jockey and trainer, underscoring the effectiveness of careful race planning and the jockey's dedication to meeting the physical demands of the sport.
