Parts of the United Kingdom have officially entered drought conditions amid an extended period of dry weather and record-breaking low rainfall levels in July. Natural Resources Wales (NRW) declared drought status for North Wales and the Upper Severn region, where rainfall has fallen below 2% of the expected total for the month, marking the driest July in nearly two centuries for the area.
The drought declaration follows weeks of heatwaves and persistent dry weather that have placed significant stress on water resources and the environment. Rivers including the Clwyd, Alwen, Alyn, Clywedog, Dyi, Conwy, and Wye in North Wales have reached new monthly minimum flow levels or are approaching historic lows. These conditions have raised concerns about impacts on ecosystems, fish populations, agriculture, and sensitive habitats. Recent wildfires in North and South-East Wales underline the severity of the dry landscape.
While NRW reports that reservoir levels remain generally stable, some reservoirs, such as Wimbleball in Somerset, Grafham in Cambridgeshire, and Hanningfield in Essex, are noted to be at "notably low" levels, with Blagdon in Somerset classified as "exceptionally low." Similar concerns exist in southern, central, and eastern England, where dry conditions have advanced many areas toward drought status. The Environment Agency highlighted that England has received roughly 3% of its average rainfall for July, with some locations in the south and east experiencing virtually no precipitation this month.
Water usage restrictions have been imposed in response to the increasingly dry conditions. Approximately 23 million people across England and Wales are now subject to hosepipe bans, with water companies warning that these measures may persist throughout the summer. Authorities have urged the public to conserve water to help alleviate pressure on dwindling supplies and prevent further environmental harm.
Agricultural sectors have felt the effects as early harvests have begun, accompanied by warnings of reduced cereal yields due to the lack of rainfall. Meteorological experts and environmental groups have cautioned that the situation reflects broader climate trends, with projections indicating UK summers may become hotter by 1 to 6 degrees Celsius and up to 60% drier by 2070.
Experts including Hannah Cloke, professor of meteorology and climate science at the University of Reading, emphasise the need for systemic changes in water management and usage behaviors to build greater resilience against future droughts. She noted that while a sustainable water future is possible, it requires substantial adaptations in the way water is collected, stored, and consumed.
The National Drought Group continues to monitor conditions closely, noting that several regions remain in "prolonged dry weather" status, the stage preceding an official drought, and additional measures are being implemented to protect water resources and vulnerable ecosystems across the UK.
