Angela Rayner, the United Kingdom’s housing secretary, has voiced sympathy for Meghan, the Duchess of Sussex, following recent revelations about allegations involving her family. The Metropolitan Police confirmed on Saturday that they passed a letter containing claims of "alleged offending" related to Meghan’s father, Thomas Markle Sr., to the duchess. The police, however, did not disclose details of the matter to other law enforcement bodies.
The Metropolitan Police said it received the letter in January 2019, which included multiple allegations concerning offending outside the UK. It remains unclear whether the police have launched a formal investigation.
The situation garnered further attention after The Sun reported that Meghan’s half-brother, Thomas Markle Jr., claimed to have discovered a collection of images belonging to their father at his former residence in the Philippines. On Friday, Meghan acknowledged that she had been informed by the Metropolitan Police of the allegations and described herself as “deeply distressed” by the revelations.
Responding to the news in an interview with Sky News, Rayner emphasized the police’s commitment to handling sensitive information appropriately and maintaining independence in their actions. She said, “The police have a very robust system in place of independence, where they will act to ensure that where they need to share information, it’s appropriate, they will do that.”
Expressing empathy for the duchess, Rayner remarked on the personal toll the situation likely imposes. “Meghan Markle has faced a tremendous amount of intrusion into her family. It must be difficult as a daughter to have all this out in the open. As a mother myself, I can understand the difficulty that that is for Meghan, and for it to be all over the news every day.”
The broader context of these allegations and the responses from involved parties remain limited, with official authorities maintaining discretion on the matter. The duchess has not publicly addressed the specific content of the allegations but has expressed distress over the situation’s impact on her family.
