Rebekah Vardy’s ITV docuseries has emerged as the most-watched television program among footballers’ wives and girlfriends, significantly outperforming similar shows featuring Coleen Rooney and Louise Owen.
The three-part series, which aired in June, attracted approximately 833,000 households, according to data from industry body Barb. This figure represents viewers watching via television sets at home and does not include streams on other devices. By comparison, Rooney’s ten-part documentary, The Real Rooneys, garnered 230,000 households in its first seven days following its debut on Disney+ on September 24. Meanwhile, Owen’s six-episode series Meet The Owens, released on Prime Video the previous month, accumulated 245,000 streams over a week.
Insiders suggest that the success of The Vardys may prompt the family and ITV to consider a second series. The original show documented Jamie Vardy’s move to Italian Serie A club Cremonese and the family’s life abroad, before their return to the UK as Jamie rejoined Burnley. According to sources, discussions are ongoing, but no formal decisions have been made. The family has acknowledged the demanding nature of fly-on-the-wall filming, which requires a high level of commitment due to the constant presence of cameras.
Both The Real Rooneys and Meet The Owens offered intimate looks into their respective families, though reviews varied. Owen’s series reportedly received negative feedback, with some critics describing it as tedious. Rooney’s documentary provided a candid glimpse into life in the couple’s £20 million Cheshire home, including tensions during filming. Ahead of the premiere, Coleen and Wayne Rooney revealed they experienced days of silence. Wayne Rooney described his approach to disagreements, stating he prefers to avoid prolonging arguments by letting Coleen express herself.
Beyond the documentary, Wayne Rooney is preparing for a new television venture, having signed up for the upcoming season of the reality show I’m A Celebrity. His fellow participants include actress Joanna Page and singer Jesy Nelson.
