The Centre for Bay of Bengal Studies (CoBOS) at Independent University, Bangladesh (IUB) held a seminar on Monday focused on emerging industries within the country's blue economy sector. The event took place on the university’s campus in Dhaka and brought together policymakers, academics, and industry stakeholders to discuss development strategies for marine resource management.

State Minister for Planning Zonayed Abdur Rahim Saki attended the seminar as the chief guest, emphasizing the government’s prioritization of the blue economy as a key area for national development. He highlighted that the Prime Minister’s Office has established a dedicated Blue Economy Cell to enhance coordination among various institutions involved in this sector. This initiative aims to unify efforts to advance the management and sustainable exploitation of Bangladesh’s maritime resources.

During the seminar, the Ministry of Planning’s focus on several priority areas within the blue economy was also underscored. These sectors include shipbuilding, port management, and overall maritime infrastructure development, which the government views as critical for economic growth and integration with global trade networks.

Javed Hosein, a member of the IUB Board of Trustees, served as the special guest of the event. Meanwhile, Vice Chancellor Prof M. Tamim delivered the welcome address, setting the stage for the discussions on planning perspectives and industry potential in the blue economy.

The seminar reflects Bangladesh’s increasing commitment to harnessing its marine resources, aiming to balance economic advancement with environmental sustainability. The blue economy, encompassing the sustainable use of ocean and coastal resources, is viewed as a strategic avenue for the country’s future growth.
