Tamsin Greig, known for her extensive work in television and theatre, is set to make her debut at London’s Royal Opera House later this month. The 60-year-old actress, celebrated for roles in popular sitcoms and dramas as well as her stage performances in Shakespeare and contemporary plays, will appear in Gaetano Donizetti’s 1840 comic opera La fille du régiment. Greig will take on the role of the Duchesse de Crakentorp, delivering a spoken interlude during the production.

Greig, who grew up in London and lives with her husband, actor and writer Richard Leaf, expressed both excitement and apprehension about the new challenge. The role offers her “carte blanche” over the timing of her spoken segment, allowing flexibility that can extend the scene considerably. She noted the conductor’s willingness to extend the accompanying waltz as needed, highlighting the unpredictability of the performance’s pacing.

This appearance follows Greig’s previous experiences attending productions at the Royal Opera House, including Peter Grimes and Madame Butterfly. Reflecting on her approach to the character, she cited the influence of Dawn French’s 2007 portrayal, noting the strong physicality and presence French brought to the role.

Greig’s television career encompasses notable series such as Black Books, Green Wing, and Friday Night Dinner, where her portrayal of family dynamics resonated widely. She discussed how her work in sitcoms has informed her understanding of rhythm and timing, skills that are transferable across performance mediums.

In addition to her screen and stage work, Greig has maintained a long-standing role as Debbie Aldridge on the radio drama The Archers for 35 years. Despite the character’s popularity, she acknowledged that recognition from the show tends to be less immediate than that from her television work.

On a personal note, Greig spoke about her close relationship with her sisters, shaped by their shared upbringing in Kilburn. She recalled family anecdotes and reflected on the formative influence of her early environment.

La fille du régiment, featuring Greig’s operatic debut, is running at the Royal Opera House until July 24.
