A medical team at Jaber Al-Ahmad Hospital in Kuwait has performed the hospital’s first hip reconstruction utilizing 3D-printing technology, the Ministry of Health announced on Tuesday. The operation was conducted under the leadership of Dr. Hashem Al-Ali, head of the orthopedic surgery department.
The patient, a 48-year-old individual, was experiencing hip joint failure compounded by complications related to metal deposition and significant pelvic bone loss. To address these issues, the surgical team employed detailed CT scans and 3D printing to create an exact replica of the patient’s pelvis prior to the procedure. This technology enabled the surgeons to thoroughly evaluate the bone defects and devise a tailored surgical plan.
The reconstruction involved the use of bone grafts alongside advanced surgical techniques to ensure joint stability and facilitate long-term bone fusion. Following the operation, the patient showed promising signs of recovery, standing and beginning to walk on the second day post-surgery.
The Ministry of Health emphasized that the milestone demonstrates Kuwait’s commitment to integrating cutting-edge medical technologies, developing national expertise in complex orthopedic treatments, and managing advanced cases within the country. This approach aligns with international medical standards and aims to reduce dependence on treatment abroad.
