Weight loss and diabetes medications that include GLP-1 receptor agonists, such as Mounjaro, Ozempic, and Wegovy, have been associated with an increased risk of hair loss, according to recent research. A study analyzing health data from approximately 50,000 adults with type 2 diabetes found evidence supporting a link between these drugs and alopecia.

Researchers from the University of Pennsylvania Health System compared rates of hair loss among patients using GLP-1 receptor agonists with those taking other classes of diabetes medications, including sodium-glucose cotransporter 2 (SGLT-2) inhibitors and dipeptidyl peptidase-4 (DPP-4) inhibitors. After adjusting for variables such as age and weight, the study revealed that individuals on GLP-1 drugs had a 37% higher risk of developing alopecia than those on SGLT-2 inhibitors, and a 68% higher risk than those on DPP-4 inhibitors.

The type of hair loss observed was primarily non-scarring alopecia, which means hair follicles remain intact, leaving the potential for hair regrowth. Although hair loss is not a direct physical harm, researchers noted it could have significant psychosocial impacts, including effects on self-esteem, quality of life, and patients’ willingness to continue treatment.

Regulatory agencies have been alerted to this potential side effect. In the United States, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) is currently evaluating the safety signal related to hair loss among users of semaglutide-based medications such as Wegovy and Ozempic, as well as tirzepatide (marketed as Mounjaro). Similarly, in the United Kingdom, the Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) has received hundreds of reports of hair loss associated with these drugs, including 399 reports linked to tirzepatide in 2026 so far, compared to 541 reports the previous year, and 148 reports related to semaglutide.

The researchers suggested that the most probable cause of hair loss is related to weight loss and reduced caloric intake prompted by these medications. Caloric restriction can lead to physiological stress and micronutrient deficiencies—such as iron, zinc, and biotin—that may disrupt the normal hair growth cycle. Additionally, other metabolic, hormonal, or immunological effects triggered by GLP-1 receptor agonists, including potential changes in thyroid function, might contribute to the condition, although further studies are needed to clarify these mechanisms.

As the popularity of GLP-1 agonists continues to rise both for diabetes management and weight loss, medical professionals and patients are advised to consider hair loss as a possible side effect and discuss appropriate monitoring and support strategies with healthcare providers.
