Jacob Bethell has been confirmed as England’s opening batsman in the One Day International (ODI) format ahead of next year’s World Cup. The decision aims to provide stability to a position that has seen several players tested over the past 18 months.
England’s search for a reliable opening partner for Ben Duckett has seen multiple candidates, including Phil Salt, Jamie Smith, Zak Crawley, and Rehan Ahmed, all receive opportunities. However, Salt, Smith, and Crawley were not included in the squad selected for the upcoming ODI series against India later in July, signaling a narrowing of options. Ahmed’s previous inclusion was considered a short-term adjustment tailored to the conditions in Sri Lanka.
Bethell, 22, has emerged as a prominent player across all formats for England. He currently bats at number three in Test matches and delivered a crucial unbeaten 76 runs batting at number four in the recent Twenty20 international against India at Emirates Old Trafford, helping England secure victory.
Expressing enthusiasm about his new role, Bethell noted his positive rapport with Duckett, adding that their partnerships have been productive and complementary in terms of scoring strategy. England’s management will be hoping that this pairing brings consistency to their ODI opening slots as they prepare for the World Cup campaign next year.
