A new comedy-drama titled *Jacob’s Stepladder*, written by American-Israeli playwright Art Feinglass, is set to premiere at the Khan Theater in Jerusalem from June 16 to 18. The play centers on a Jewish father who becomes a single parent after the mother leaves, chronicling his relationship with his daughter over two decades. It delves into themes of parental legacy, the challenges of letting go, and the complexities of Jewish identity, even from the perspective of an atheist confronting personal upheaval.
Feinglass, whose previous works include *Mississippi Summer*—which explores the involvement of Jewish Americans in the civil rights movement of the 1960s—and *Arrivals*, about Ashkenazi and Mizrahi immigrants attempting to establish new lives, draws heavily on his own experience as a single father in this latest production. Both earlier plays have been staged off-Broadway in New York.
Having relocated to Israel in 1968, Feinglass lived on Kibbutz Lahav in the Negev, attended Ben-Gurion University, and served in the Israel Defense Forces during the Yom Kippur War. Currently based in Seattle and New York, he divides his time between the United States and Jerusalem, where he serves as the artistic director of the Crossroads Theater Shed.
Tickets for *Jacob’s Stepladder* are available through the Khan Theater’s box office.
