Jake Minshull, a 21-year-old 400m hurdler from Coventry, is preparing to compete at the European Athletics Championships next week, which will be held in Birmingham. Currently studying for a human sciences degree in the city, Minshull trains at the Alexander Stadium track three times a week, an experience he believes gives him an advantage by providing familiarity with the venue and local conditions.

Minshull described the upcoming competition as feeling like a “home event” due to his regular presence at the stadium and his knowledge of the area’s weather patterns. Balancing the demands of high-level athletics with academic responsibilities has been challenging; after finding the workload intense during his second year, he decided to split his third year to better manage training and studies.

Earlier this year, Minshull was part of the British 4x400m relay team that won a bronze medal at the World Relay Championships in May. He further enhanced his athletic profile by securing a silver medal in the 400m hurdles at the recent Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, an achievement he described as “pretty surreal” and unexpected. He noted that while he believed a medal was possible mentally, succeeding in competition exceeded his expectations and has increased his confidence heading into the European Championships.

Minshull is among a strong field of athletes vying for success in Birmingham. Key competitors in the 400m hurdles include Germany’s Emil Agyekum, 27, and Norway’s Karsten Warholm, 30, who is both the Olympic champion and world record holder in the event. Minshull acknowledged the high caliber of the field and expressed admiration for Warholm, noting similarities in their stride patterns and race strategies. He expressed enthusiasm about the prospect of racing against such elite opponents.

Minshull is part of the 98-member Novuna GB & NI squad competing at the championships. Novuna, which is the official finance partner of British Athletics and sponsor of the GB & NI Athletics Team, supports athletes in pursuing both everyday and world-class ambitions.
