Jake Wright has been dismissed as manager of Sherwood Colliery despite a strong recent run of results. Wright, 40, who is also a well-known central defender, had taken charge of the United Counties League Premier North side after the club's defeat in last season’s play-off semi-finals to Newark Town.

Under Wright’s leadership, Sherwood Colliery won four of their last five matches. Most recently, the team secured a 1-0 victory over Boston Town, a Step 4 side, in the FA Cup on Saturday. This win advanced the club to the first qualifying round, where they are set to face Gainsborough Trinity. Despite these positive outcomes, the club decided to part ways with Wright.

The former Oxford United and Sheffield United player expressed his disappointment at the decision. “Really disappointed to have been relieved of my duties at Sherwood after such a short period of time. Winning four of our last five games and just progressing in the FA Cup against Step 4 opposition,” Wright stated. He also indicated that he is now seeking new opportunities either as a player or in a managerial role.

Sherwood Colliery issued a statement explaining the reasoning behind the dismissal. “Following discussions regarding the structure and direction of the first-team set-up going forward, the club felt that a change was in its best interests,” the statement read, without providing further details.

Wright’s departure comes as a surprise given the team’s recent performance improvements and progress in the FA Cup campaign. The club has yet to announce a replacement manager or outline the next steps for the team’s leadership.
