Jameis Winston addressed questions about his performance and future with the New York Giants following the team's 12-7 victory over the Tennessee Titans on Sunday. Despite a win, Winston faced ongoing criticism regarding his consistency and ability to make key plays, prompting the quarterback to respond publicly to doubts about his arm strength and overall effectiveness.
Winston, who last started a full NFL season in 2019 with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers—leading the league in both passing yards and interceptions—acknowledged that public expectations of him often focus on flashy statistics rather than game management and winning performances. “Honestly, I feel like a lot of people are surprised that we can win a game in the manner that we did because everyone’s so used to me throwing for 500 yards and throwing interceptions,” Winston said. He noted that while other quarterbacks are not questioned after modest passing performances, his own playing style has caused differing assumptions about his current capabilities.
The Giants’ acquisition of backup quarterback J.J. McCarthy, a former first-round pick obtained in a Monday trade for a fifth-round draft selection, adds another layer of scrutiny for Winston. The move came just three weeks after Winston signed a two-year, $13 million contract extension, leading to speculation about the team’s confidence in his long-term role. Winston acknowledged the reality of NFL competition but emphasized that his focus remains on performance, regardless of personnel changes. “I have to play well regardless. When you’re the quarterback for the New York Football Giants, you have to give your team a chance to win,” he said.
At McCarthy’s first practice with the Giants, he was seen participating in individual drills behind Winston and practice squad quarterback Jake Haener. The two quarterbacks stayed after practice for additional work, underscoring a collaborative approach despite the competitive setting. Winston spoke positively about McCarthy’s attitude and determination, calling him “curious” and eager to make an impact in his new environment.
Winston’s recent on-field performance has drawn mixed reviews. Since taking over as starter from the injured Jaxson Dart, he has yet to throw a touchdown in seven quarters and completed just 51% of his passes for 229 yards, holding a 55.6 quarterback rating. His teammates, including tight end Isaiah Likely, describe the offense as still undergoing “growing pains,” but express confidence in the chemistry developing with Winston. Likely said, “Me and Jameis are fighting like heck to try to be on the same page,” reflecting the ongoing process of adjustment.
With the Arizona Cardinals visiting MetLife Stadium this Sunday, the Giants will look to build on their 2-1 record. Winston expressed a clear goal to improve the offense’s efficiency, stating, “My desire is to score some touchdowns this game... Like, it’s required.” New York faces a Cardinals team averaging 21 points per game but allowing 27, adding urgency for a stronger scoring effort.
Giants head coach John Harbaugh has confirmed Winston as the starter "for the foreseeable future," though he has not publicly addressed any concerns about job security following McCarthy's arrival. Winston himself welcomed the competition as motivation, noting, “I feel challenged to get better every single day.” He concluded by reaffirming his aspirations, saying, “No matter the circumstances, conditions, or facts, my mind is on what my heart desires, and that’s to be a Super Bowl-winning quarterback.”
