Former England and Manchester City goalkeeper David James has suggested that James Trafford should remain at Manchester City to compete for the starting goalkeeper position under new head coach Enzo Maresca. However, James also acknowledged that a transfer to Newcastle United would be a suitable option if Trafford is told he will not be the club’s first-choice goalkeeper.

Newcastle United is actively seeking a new goalkeeper this summer, despite having recently signed France under-21 international Ewen Jaouen from Stade Reims. The club faces potential departures in goal, with Nick Pope likely to leave after a challenging season, and Aaron Ramsdale, John Ruddy, and Max Thompson having already departed.

Trafford, 23, has been heavily linked with a move to Newcastle, coming close to joining the club last summer. Any transfer would likely involve a significant fee, and Newcastle would have to wait until after Trafford’s commitments with England at the World Cup before finalizing any decision.

While Newcastle reportedly has other goalkeeper targets, James believes Trafford would be an ideal addition to head coach Eddie Howe’s squad, particularly if Maresca opts to install Gianluigi Donnarumma as City’s starting keeper. The situation remains fluid as both clubs assess their options ahead of the upcoming season.
