LeBron James has announced that he will depart the Los Angeles Lakers after an eight-year tenure and continue his NBA career with a different team for a record-extending 24th season. The 41-year-old forward informed the Lakers of his decision as the league’s free agency period began, signaling one of the most significant player movements in the current NBA offseason.

James, the NBA’s all-time leading scorer, joined the Lakers in 2018 and led them to the 2020 NBA championship, a title secured during the pandemic-affected postseason bubble. His time in Los Angeles marks his longest single stint with any franchise, during which he broke numerous records. Previously, James spent seven seasons in Cleveland, followed by four years in Miami—where he won two of his four championships—then returned to Cleveland for another four years. His career has been marked by unparalleled individual accolades, including 22 All-Star selections, four NBA MVP awards, and four NBA Finals MVPs.

Despite being the oldest active player in the league and approaching his 42nd birthday in December, James has confirmed he will return for at least one more season. His motivation, as stated in recent interviews, remains focused on competing for additional championships rather than financial gain. Family considerations also played a role; James indicated that his wife Savannah and their 12-year-old daughter Zhuri had significant input on his continuation in the sport.

As James enters free agency, several teams are positioned as potential destinations. The Golden State Warriors are viewed as strong contenders, bolstered by James’s shared history and close relationships with teammates Stephen Curry and Draymond Green, as well as coach Steve Kerr—figures connected through past NBA Finals matchups and the recent 2024 Paris Olympics. Green, who recently declined his $27.6 million player option for the upcoming season to provide roster flexibility, emphasized his willingness to collaborate with the team on its future plans.

In addition to Golden State, possible reunions with the Cleveland Cavaliers and Miami Heat remain on the table, given James’s previous successful stints with both franchises. Another suggested option is the San Antonio Spurs, where James could team up with rising star Victor Wembanyama. The decision on James’s next team will be closely watched as the league’s moratorium on official signings lifts on July 6.

The Los Angeles Lakers released a statement expressing gratitude for James’s eight seasons, highlighting his contributions to the franchise’s history and his pivotal role in capturing the 2020 championship. Lakers co-owner Jeanie Buss described James as “one of the greatest athletes in history” and affirmed that he will always remain a cherished member of the Lakers family.

As free agency unfolds, James and his longtime agent, Rich Paul of Klutch Sports, are scheduled to meet with interested teams. While the timeline for James’s final decision remains uncertain, his choice will be a significant moment in this offseason, especially alongside other notable roster moves such as Giannis Antetokounmpo’s recent trade to Miami.
