Everton midfielder James Garner is aiming to build on his recent goal as the team prepares to face Newcastle United in the Premier League. The two clubs met earlier this week in the Carabao Cup, where Everton secured a 3-1 victory at home. Garner, 25, opened the scoring in that match, marking his first goal of the season.
Reflecting on his performance, Garner acknowledged the need to increase his goal tally but said scoring boosted his confidence and helped the team gain momentum. “I don’t score enough, which I need to start doing. But to score and to put the team on the front foot is a good feeling,” he said. “Good performances and something like a goal does boost your confidence. I just need to stay positive.”
The upcoming match at Newcastle’s St James’ Park will be Everton’s second meeting with the Magpies in four days. Manager David Moyes faces a decision regarding the inclusion of Jack Grealish, who was absent from the cup game due to disciplinary reasons. The former England winger, on loan from Manchester City, has been sidelined since October 17 after a heavy defeat to Chelsea. Reports indicated that Grealish spent two consecutive nights drinking last month, leading to his suspension from the squad.
Defensive concerns for Everton could ease with the expected return of centre-back Jarrad Branthwaite, who had missed recent games due to concussion protocols following a collision with Chelsea goalkeeper Emi Martinez. Moyes confirmed that Branthwaite “should have recovered from his concussion and also the timescale which we had to abide by.”
Everton have struggled in the Premier League, having not secured a victory since September. The team will be seeking to reverse that trend in this weekend’s fixture as they look to build on their recent cup success and secure points on the road against Newcastle.
