James Madison University’s football team has defied expectations under new head coach Billy Napier in the 2026 season. Despite significant roster turnover and the departure of former head coach Bob Chesney, who left to lead UCLA, the Dukes have started the year with a perfect 7-0 record overall and 4-0 in Sun Belt Conference play. They have also posted an impressive 6-1 mark against the spread.

James Madison faced considerable challenges entering the season. The team lost 23 of the 27 players who logged at least 200 snaps in 2025, leading many to predict a rebuilding year. Instead of following its typical strategy of hiring a relatively unknown assistant from the Football Championship Subdivision (FCS) to replace Chesney, the university appointed Billy Napier, previously the head coach at Florida. Napier’s tenure with Florida ended after four seasons with a 22-23 record.

However, Napier’s early performance with the Dukes has been encouraging. James Madison features one of the nation’s most potent rushing attacks, averaging 5.3 yards per carry—ranking 13th nationally—and 212.5 rushing yards per game, which places them 12th overall. The Dukes favor the run heavily, executing running plays on nearly 57 percent of offensive snaps. This ground-heavy approach helps relieve pressure on quarterback Camden Coleman and contributes to the team’s balanced offensive output.

Looking ahead, James Madison is set to play Appalachian State at Kidd Brewer Stadium on Thursday night, entering as a 10.5-point favorite. Appalachian State has a mixed defensive record and plays one of the easiest schedules in the Football Bowl Subdivision, according to SP+ metrics. The Mountaineers’ three victories over FBS opponents this season have all been by one score and against teams ranked near the bottom of SP+ ratings.

Given these factors, analysts largely expect James Madison to maintain their winning momentum and control the matchup. The forthcoming game will provide further insight into how coach Napier’s system continues to evolve and how the Dukes manage the challenges of a demanding conference schedule.
