James McAvoy has joined forces once again with James Corden for a new comedy series titled The Choir, currently in production for Apple TV. The show marks a significant collaboration following Corden’s success with Gavin & Stacey. McAvoy will lead the eight-episode series, which is expected to air late next year.
The Choir centers on the story of an estranged brother and sister who reconnect through their involvement in a local choir. McAvoy stars alongside Ruth Jones, Corden’s former co-star from Gavin & Stacey, who co-wrote the series and plays the sibling role opposite him. The ensemble cast also includes notable actors such as Jim Broadbent, David Harewood, Jason Watkins, and Hannah Waddingham.
The pairing of McAvoy and Corden reflects a long-standing professional relationship, spanning over two decades. They first worked together in the British film Starter For Ten, which was based on the quiz show University Challenge. More recently, Corden made a cameo appearance as a music executive in McAvoy’s film California Schemin’, which revolves around two Scotsmen posing as American rappers in pursuit of fame.
According to a television industry source, McAvoy’s involvement in The Choir can be seen as a reciprocal gesture following Corden’s participation in California Schemin’. During the promotion of that film, McAvoy discussed how securing a high-profile cameo was crucial in obtaining financing. He explained that a portion of funding came with a condition for a recognizable star to appear, prompting the filmmakers to expand an existing scene and reach out to contacts in the industry. McAvoy described Corden’s involvement as ideal for the role, indicating that the collaboration benefited both actors.
The Choir represents a significant new project for McAvoy, showcasing his versatility in the comedy genre and continuing his professional connection with Corden and Jones. The series is anticipated by audiences familiar with the trio’s previous work and is part of Apple TV’s ongoing expansion into original scripted programming.
