Scottish actor James McAvoy has disclosed a serious health scare involving a lung operation that nearly cost him his life. The 47-year-old star underwent a biopsy after doctors detected a shadow on his lungs, which was later confirmed not to be cancerous.
However, shortly after the procedure, McAvoy experienced a severe complication. He recounted that just two days after returning home, his lungs collapsed while he was alone in bed, prompting an emergency hospital stay lasting three weeks. During that time, doctors attempted numerous treatments to clear the affected lung area, but none were successful.
Ultimately, medical staff decided to perform a more invasive surgery, requiring them to open his chest cavity to thoroughly clean the lungs using dish soap and manually remove the debris. This radical approach was necessary to resolve the persistent infection or blockage.
The health crisis occurred as McAvoy was preparing for his role in the 2019 film "Glass." Due to his condition, his training regimen was severely limited in the early stages of recovery. He noted that for the first month, physical rehabilitation prevented him from engaging in basic cardiovascular activities such as running, cycling, or jogging.
McAvoy’s experience highlights the potential risks that can accompany lung biopsies and subsequent complications. Despite the life-threatening episode and prolonged hospitalization, he eventually returned to work and completed filming.
