James Milner has begun a coaching role at Liverpool’s academy as part of his progression toward a full-time career in coaching. The former Liverpool midfielder, who retired from professional football this summer after a 24-year playing career, has been working with youth players at the club’s Kirkby training facility.

Milner is currently involved on a casual basis and is not an official permanent staff member. His work primarily focuses on the Under-11 age group, with plans to extend his involvement to other academy levels over time. This arrangement allows him to gain practical experience while he pursues further coaching qualifications.

The 40-year-old has previously expressed a clear ambition to transition into coaching and has already obtained his UEFA A Licence. He is now working toward completing the UEFA Pro Licence, the highest coaching certification in European football. Milner’s previous experience includes working with Liverpool’s academy during his playing days and participating in coaching sessions at Brighton & Hove Albion under the management of Fabian Hurzeler.

Liverpool’s academy, based in Kirkby, is renowned for its development of young talent, and Milner’s involvement adds a high-profile figure with extensive professional experience to the coaching setup.
