James Philp, goalkeeper for Cambridge City, has been named the first recipient of the newly renamed Billy Vigar Award by Isthmian League officials in recognition of an act of exceptional sportsmanship and quick-thinking during a medical emergency on the field. The award, honoring the memory of former Chichester City player Billy Vigar who died last September after an accident on the pitch, is presented annually for outstanding sporting achievement within the Isthmian League season.

Philp’s award-winning actions occurred on April 25 during a fixture between Cambridge City and Brantham Athletic when Brantham player Ashton Bullard suddenly collapsed during the match. According to Brantham Athletic vice-chairman Darren Smith, Philp acted swiftly, putting aside the competitive nature of the game to attend immediately to Bullard. Philp collaborated effectively with match officials to summon medical personnel from both clubs, ensuring prompt emergency response.

Beyond providing medical support, Philp remained at Bullard’s side throughout the incident, offering reassurance and emotional stability to players, officials, and supporters witnessing the distressing scene. Smith highlighted that Philp’s professional experience as a clinical worker at Addenbrooke’s Hospital was apparent in his calm approach, while his empathy created a sense of comfort amid the crisis.

Philp received the Billy Vigar Award during the Isthmian League annual awards ceremony last Saturday, where the trophy was presented by Vigar’s parents, Keith and Camilla. The league praised Philp as an exemplary recipient who embodied the values associated with Vigar’s legacy by prioritizing the welfare of a fellow player in a critical moment.

The establishment of this award serves both to commemorate the late Billy Vigar and to recognize acts of outstanding sportsmanship and humanity within the league. Philp’s actions have been widely acknowledged as a poignant reminder of the spirit of respect and care that transcends competition in football.
