The Boston Pops have announced that Emmy- and Golden Globe-winning actress Jane Lynch and Tony Award-winning actress Megan Hilty will join the lineup for this year’s July 4 Fireworks Spectacular. The annual free concert is set to take place at the Hatch Shell on the Charles River Esplanade.
Lynch will serve as the event’s host. She is widely recognized for her role as cheer coach Sue Sylvester on the television series “Glee” and recently earned an Emmy nomination for her performance as Sazz Pataki on “Only Murders in the Building.” Hilty, known for her Broadway work, most recently starred in the musical “Death Becomes Her,” originating the role of Madeline Ashton and earning a Tony Award for her performance.
Both artists have a history with the Boston Pops. Hilty previously performed at the Fireworks Spectacular in 2014, while Lynch appeared on the Symphony Hall stage in 2019. Boston Pops conductor Keith Lockhart expressed enthusiasm about their return, describing the additions as enhancing an already star-studded lineup that includes Lainey Wilson, Chance the Rapper, and Trombone Shorty.
This year’s Fireworks Spectacular serves as the flagship event for MA250, a state-sponsored initiative celebrating 250 years of Massachusetts history and the founding of the United States. The concert features a blend of well-known and local performers, including the Boston Children’s Chorus, Boston Crusaders Drum and Bugle Corps, Middlesex County Volunteers Drums and Fifes, Tanglewood Festival Chorus, and the USS Constitution Color Guard. The evening will also highlight Massachusetts poet laureate Regie Gibson and pianist Pelin Su Yavuz, who is 20 years old.
For those unable to attend in person, portions of the event, including the fireworks display, will be broadcast by CNN. The network’s telecast, cohosted by Anderson Cooper and Pamela Brown reporting live from the Esplanade, will air from 7 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. Additionally, the full event will be available for streaming via CNN All Access and broadcast locally on WHDH-TV Channel 7.
