Japan secured gold medals in swimming and karate on Monday at the 2026 Asian Games held in Aichi and Nagoya, marking a strong showing on the third day of competition at the first summer edition of the Games hosted by Japan in 32 years.
Seventeen-year-old Shin Ohashi shared the top spot in the men’s 100-meter breaststroke, clocking a time of 58.64 seconds to tie with China’s Dong Zhihao. In addition, Japan’s men’s 4x200-meter freestyle relay team—comprising Tatsuya Murasa, Katsuhiro Matsumoto, Kazusa Kuroda, and Tomoyuki Matsushita—set a new national record with a time of 7 minutes, 1.05 seconds, but finished second behind China to take the silver medal. On the women's side, Mio Narita earned a bronze medal in the 200-meter individual medley.
In karate, Kakeru Nishiyama captured gold in the men’s individual kata event, extending Japan’s winning streak to three consecutive Asian Games in this discipline.
Japan also saw strong performances in gymnastics, with Shinnosuke Oka scoring 84.698 points to claim silver in the men’s individual all-around competition. Daiki Hashimoto added a bronze medal, while China’s Zhang Boheng took the gold.
The Japanese triathlon mixed relay team, made up of Mako Hiraizumi, Kazushi Jozuka, Manami Hayashi, and Takumi Hojo, settled for silver, falling short of defending their title for a fourth consecutive time as China secured gold.
These results highlight Japan’s continued presence as a competitive force in multiple disciplines across the Asian Games, bolstered by both emerging talents and experienced athletes, as the host nation aims to build momentum throughout the event.
