Japan’s Hojo Takumi claimed the first gold medal of the 2026 Asian Games in Aichi-Nagoya on Sunday, winning the men’s individual triathlon and securing a quota spot for the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics. Hojo completed the race in 52 minutes and 56 seconds, edging out China’s Zhang Xirui by nine seconds. Kazakhstan’s Arlan Zhanabay took the bronze medal.

Hojo, 30, trailed Zhang going into the running segment but launched a decisive surge that allowed him to overtake the Chinese athlete and cross the finish line first. Notably, Hojo dyed his hair bright red to match Team Japan’s tracksuits, a symbolic gesture that highlighted his determination.

Having missed qualification for both the Tokyo 2020 and Paris 2024 Olympic Games, Hojo viewed this event as a critical opportunity. “The moment I found out this was going to be the first gold medal of the event, I knew it was a chance to bring triathlon to the fore in Japan,” Hojo said. He described the Asian Games as a key milestone en route to Los Angeles in 2028.
