A major cyberattack targeting Japan’s leading frozen food producer Nichirei has caused widespread disruption across the country’s food supply chain, affecting businesses including Kentucky Fried Chicken Japan and the sushi restaurant chain Kura Sushi Inc. The incident, first revealed by Nichirei on Monday, has led to delays in deliveries and raised concerns over potential product shortages and temporary store closures.

Nichirei, which holds a significant role in Japan’s frozen food sector as well as in temperature-controlled logistics, reported “system failures caused by unauthorized access” but has not provided specific details on the nature of the cyberattack. The company confirmed on Wednesday that the attack affected operations across its subsidiaries and client deliveries.

Kura Sushi, operating nearly 700 locations domestically and internationally, reported delays in shipments for some products, particularly impacting stores in western Japan. Meanwhile, Kentucky Fried Chicken Japan issued a warning on Tuesday that supply shortages could force the chain to reduce menu offerings or temporarily close certain restaurants.

The disruption is not limited to the fast food industry. Local news outlets have reported shortages at supermarkets and impacts on other sectors such as pastry production and elderly care facilities, highlighting the broad consequences of the cyberattack on Japan’s food distribution network.

Nichirei stated it is actively investigating the breach and taking steps to restore systems, aiming to gradually resume normal operations starting Friday.

This incident follows a recent pattern of cyberattacks targeting major Japanese companies. Last year, beverage giant Asahi suffered a ransomware attack that interrupted its order processing and shipping capabilities. Similarly, retail chain Muji had to halt online shopping services in Japan after a ransomware attack targeted its delivery partner Askul.

Authorities and industry stakeholders continue to monitor the situation as Nichirei works towards recovery and as affected businesses adapt to ongoing supply challenges.
