Jason Pinnock is set to start at safety for the New York Giants in Sunday’s game against the New Orleans Saints, marking his return from the concussion protocol amid Tyler Nubin’s absence due to a neck injury. The Giants will look to leverage Pinnock’s aggressive style as they face Saints quarterback Tyler Shough, who has proven vulnerable to blitzes.
Pinnock expressed readiness for the opportunity, noting his enthusiasm for the defensive scheme under coordinator Dennard Wilson. “I’ve been waiting since I heard this system was coming back,” Pinnock said. He cited his previous production—including 6.5 sacks during the 2022-24 seasons—as evidence that he fits well in the all-out blitz approach. Pinnock regards the upcoming game as a chance to secure a starting role with a strong performance.
The dynamic between Pinnock and Nubin reflects a competitive but respectful rivalry. Both players have competed for the starting safety spot. Nubin initially won the job during training camp but has struggled with a recurring issue involving missed assignments on run defense, which has resulted in costly explosive gains. Despite offseason training focused on improving his recovery speed, Nubin’s challenges have led to rotations, with Pinnock replacing him in Weeks 3 and 4. In Week 5, Nubin remained on the field until sustaining an injury, after which Ar’Darius Washington stepped in.
Defensive backs coach Donald D’Alessio emphasized the technical aspects affecting Nubin’s performance, highlighting footwork and angles as critical components to maintaining position. He also noted that when both players are healthy, the Giants might consider rotating them, describing this as a “good problem to have.”
Pinnock, who had served as Nubin’s mentor in 2024 before briefly playing for the San Francisco 49ers, stressed the importance of playing confidently when given the chance. “I’m just looking to, when I get my opportunity, play great ball and play free,” he said. Both players are characterized as highly competitive leaders, and Pinnock hopes their contest for the position will ultimately bolster continuity and effectiveness in the Giants’ defensive unit.
Head coach John Harbaugh has demonstrated a willingness to make midseason roster adjustments, as seen when he benched center John Michael Schmitz in favor of Bryan Hudson. Harbaugh explained that decisions to replace starters are made on a case-by-case basis, driven primarily by performance and injuries. “You can bet there’s someone chomping at the bit ready to take advantage of that opportunity and make their mark,” he said, reflecting the competitive environment within the team.
Sunday’s game will serve as a significant test for Pinnock as he aims to solidify his role in the Giants’ defensive backfield while helping the team counter a vulnerable opponent.
