Jason Watkins, a British actor known for his versatility and commanding supporting roles, is currently starring in the psychological drama series The Game, sharing the lead with Robson Green. Watkins plays Huw Miller, a recently retired detective whose hopes for a peaceful life are quickly undermined, while Green portrays Patrick Harbottle, a serial killer who maintains his psychological grip from inside prison.

Watkins, speaking via video call, emphasized the significance of co-leading the series alongside Green, noting the opportunity to deeply explore his character. “When you’re in the middle of it, as I am here, with Robson, you have time to flesh out your character and make the most of the opportunities you’ve been given,” he said. He likened the experience to painting a full portrait rather than isolated details, underscoring the creative fulfillment of taking a leading role.

Despite approaching his 64th birthday, Watkins said he looks younger than his age and can still convincingly portray characters in their early fifties. Born in Shropshire and raised in Wolverhampton, Watkins initially pursued sports as a child before shifting his focus to acting. He trained at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art and has since amassed more than 140 film and television credits, complementing his screen work with frequent stage appearances, including a 2025 revival of Chekhov’s The Seagull alongside Cate Blanchett.

Watkins gained wider recognition through television comedies such as Trollied, set in a supermarket, and the BBC’s W1A, where he played a corporate executive. He has also been praised for dramatic roles, including his portrayal of former British Prime Minister Harold Wilson in The Crown and his award-winning performance in the true crime series The Lost Honour of Christopher Jefferies.

Known for his relatable, everyman appeal, Watkins’s characters often exhibit a grounded, human vulnerability. In The Game, his portrayal of Miller as a flawed and fallible detective contrasts with typical television detectives who tend to be self-assured or troubled in predictable ways. Watkins described his character as “nervy, uncertain and prone to making errors of judgment,” aiming to reflect authentic emotional responses to intense situations.

Watkins’s personal life has been marked by tragedy. In 2020, his two-year-old daughter Maud died suddenly from sepsis. He and his wife Clara later created the documentary Jason & Clara: In Memory of Maudie, aired in 2023 on ITV, to raise awareness about the illness. Watkins acknowledged the difficulty of sharing such a personal story publicly but said many viewers expressed gratitude, noting that the experience has made him more relatable as an actor.

Currently living in north London with his wife and two children, Watkins remains active in the industry. He will next appear in The Joy of Sex, a film centered on the 1972 publication of a controversial sex manual, starring alongside Colin Firth and Julianne Moore. Beyond acting, Watkins is exploring other creative outlets, including writing a novel. He cited fellow actor David Thewlis as an inspiration in his pursuits outside acting, highlighting a desire to expand his artistic horizons while continuing his established career.
