BOSTON — Jayson Tatum led the Boston Celtics to a narrow 107-103 victory over the New York Knicks on Friday night, delivering a dominant performance that underscored the Celtics’ strong start to the season. Tatum scored 36 points, including nine in the final six minutes, to help Boston hold off a Knicks team that rallied from a double-digit deficit late in the fourth quarter.

The win improved the Celtics’ record to 2-0 as the defending Eastern Conference champions extended their early-season momentum. The Knicks, conversely, remain winless at 0-2 following another close loss.

Tatum’s scoring prowess was on full display, particularly down the stretch where he made several difficult shots to seal the game. His steady offensive output overshadowed New York’s backcourt, as Jalen Brunson struggled to find his rhythm. Brunson finished with 19 points but shot 7-for-17 from the field, including a disappointing outing that followed his subpar performance in Tuesday’s season opener against the Philadelphia 76ers.

New York’s difficulties were compounded by the continued struggles of Mikal Bridges, who went scoreless on 0-for-8 shooting and was benched during the final eight and a half minutes. Bridges has yet to find his form this season, making just 2 of 16 shots across two games and playing 22 minutes against Boston. The Knicks inserted Deuce McBride off the bench, who provided a bright spot with 20 points.

Knicks head coach Tom Thibodeau expressed frustration with Bridges' shooting but emphasized the importance of continued attempts. “Mikal had three or four wide-open 3s. Obviously, we want him to make half of them if they’re open, but he’s got to keep shooting,” said Thibodeau.

Brunson acknowledged that while the team made some progress, it was insufficient to overcome Boston’s surge. “I think we took a stride, just not big enough strides,” he said. “There are positives and negatives to take from this game. We know what we have to do, and the things I think are glaring to us are controllable. That’s a positive we can take from this.”

Boston’s victory highlighted the defensive adjustments that slowed New York’s offense late, with Tatum’s clutch scoring ultimately proving decisive in the tightly contested matchup. The Celtics will look to maintain their undefeated start as they continue their home stand, while the Knicks face mounting pressure to find offensive consistency early in the season.
