Chicago — Jazz Chisholm Jr. was held out of the New York Yankees’ lineup Friday afternoon as a precaution after experiencing right hamstring cramps the previous day, but manager Aaron Boone indicated the second baseman’s condition was not serious.
Chisholm exited Thursday’s game against the Chicago White Sox early after developing cramps in the bottom of the eighth inning and showed signs of discomfort running to first base in the ninth. He remained on the field, stretching and favoring his right leg before being replaced by pinch runner José Caballero in the 11th inning.
Boone described Chisholm as a “fully active player” for Friday’s game against the Cubs at Wrigley Field but opted to give him additional rest, especially with left-hander Shota Imanaga starting on the mound. “He is OK,” Boone said prior to the 2-0 victory. “It does seem like it was just cramps. He gave me the thumbs-up today. With a lefty going and the turnaround for a day game, I just didn’t want to risk anything.”
Chisholm was slated to follow his usual pregame routine and be available to pinch hit if necessary, but he did not enter the game. José Caballero started at second base in his stead. Boone added that the Yankees’ medical staff felt optimistic about Chisholm’s status.
This cautionary approach underscores the Yankees’ continued efforts to manage player health amid a string of injuries. Key players Aaron Judge, Cody Bellinger, and Giancarlo Stanton remain sidelined and on the injured list. Judge and Stanton, who had been present for the White Sox series at Guaranteed Rate Field, returned to New York on Thursday to continue rehabilitation programs.
Meanwhile, pitcher Clarke Schmidt threw another bullpen session Friday at Double-A Somerset as part of his recovery from Tommy John surgery. The team continues to monitor its roster health closely as it navigates the season.
