Belgium winger Jeremy Doku provided a moment of levity during the national team’s preparations ahead of their World Cup Group G opener against Egypt. The Manchester City forward was filmed sparring in a boxing session with teammate Koni de Winter at the squad’s training base in Washington State. The lighthearted encounter between Doku and the AC Milan defender has since become an inside joke among the players.
Benfica winger Dodi Lukebakio, who shared the video on social media, described the session as a way for the team to stay engaged and entertained amid the tournament build-up. “Don’t worry, it didn’t get too rough,” Lukebakio said, noting the atmosphere remained upbeat. He added that the squad has been closely following early World Cup matches and is eager to begin their campaign.
Belgium will face Egypt, led by Liverpool’s Mohamed Salah, tomorrow in Seattle, marking the start of their group stage. Lukebakio, 28, who has scored four goals in his last three international appearances, is preparing to serve as a potential impact substitute for Doku. Despite his recent form, Lukebakio acknowledged the challenge of not being a regular starter but emphasized a team-first attitude.
“It is my goal to always play and be in the starting line-up,” he said. “At the same time, it’s true I’ve done well as a substitute. I am a competitive animal and if my role at the moment is to make a difference from the bench, I’ll do it with pleasure.” He stressed the importance of responding positively to the coach’s decisions, regardless of personal preference, and reaffirmed his commitment to contributing to the team’s success.
“Every player has their own ambitions and personality. One accepts a substitute role, the other doesn’t. But I think you always have to react positively, even if you don’t like sitting on the bench. That is my mindset. If the coach needs me, I want to be there,” Lukebakio said.
Reflecting on the significance of participating in the World Cup, he described it as a fulfillment of a lifelong dream and reiterated his focus on helping Belgium progress in the tournament. The Red Devils’ preparations continue as they seek to make a strong start in Seattle against Egypt.
