American striker JJ Williams marked his full competitive debut for Heart of Midlothian with a goal in Friday’s 3-0 victory over Stenhousemuir in the Premier Sports Cup quarter-final. The 28-year-old, who joined Hearts this summer from Rhode Island, not only opened the scoring but also set up Yan Dhanda for the third goal in the match at Ochilview Park.
Despite his strong performance, Williams said he expected a more critical response from his father, Jerome Snr, emphasizing that his family’s competitive mindset drives him to aim higher. “I should have scored a hat-trick,” Williams said, reflecting on the game. “When I call dad first thing he’ll say, ‘Great game – but you missed two.’ That’s the reality.” The striker described growing up in a military family with five older siblings who all play sports, which instilled a determined and disciplined approach to competition. “I raise my boys the same way – if you do something, do it to your best ability,” he added.
Williams has quickly adapted to the intensity of Scottish football, noting the passionate support from Hearts fans. “The supporters were amazing. As long as you give them 100 per cent, they’ll be behind you,” he said. “I’ve been to a lot of great places but never been as close to such intensity before. The fans energise you with their passion and they have been amazing in giving me support.” During the match, Hearts supporters chanted “USA” in recognition of the American forward’s contribution.
Prior to this game, Williams had made substitute appearances in victories against Hibernian and Dundee. His 78 minutes at Ochilview indicated his growing role within the team. “Now I’m here, I want to take my chance,” he said. “It’s a dream. The quality of the players here speaks for itself and that’s what I’m so excited about.”
Williams also expressed his ambition to secure a spot on the United States national team. “Absolutely,” he confirmed when asked about the prospect of a USA cap. “I’m just a boy from Alabama – we don’t get those opportunities much. But if I keep my head down, score goals and help my team win, that’s what I’m here for.” He concluded by emphasizing his primary focus on club success: “If it happens after that then great – but Hearts will be winning and that’s all that matters.”
