Cristiano Ronaldo has publicly accused Portugal coach Jorge Jesus of breaking his word on two occasions, a dispute that led to the forward’s departure from the national team camp ahead of their Nations League match against Denmark on October 1. In a detailed statement released after the incident, Ronaldo outlined the sequence of events and expressed willingness to return after facing any disciplinary action.
The 41-year-old Portugal captain said he and Jesus had agreed on a plan for Ronaldo to miss the matches against Norway and Denmark to manage his fitness. However, on the day of the Norway game, Ronaldo was told he would play for 30 minutes. Although he warmed up from halftime, he was ultimately not substituted onto the field, which Ronaldo described as a broken promise.
Following the match, Ronaldo said he and Jesus, along with Al Nassr sporting director Simão Coutinho, met and reached an understanding that the coach would publicly clarify the situation at his next press conference. According to Ronaldo, an eight-point document was prepared stating that he had never demanded playing time, respected the coach’s decisions, and acknowledged that Jesus’s decision to have him warm up without playing was a mistake. Ronaldo emphasized that this document did not call for an apology from Jesus but maintained the coach would explain the matter publicly. When Jesus failed to do so, Ronaldo said it marked the second time he felt the coach had broken his word, prompting him to leave the training camp before the match against Denmark.
Ronaldo apologized to his teammates and supporters for leaving the camp abruptly and for not greeting fans after the Norway game, acknowledging the greater responsibility that comes with his role as captain. He said he accepted any consequences imposed by the Portuguese Football Federation (FPF) and confirmed he remained available to represent Portugal once any punishment is served, provided he remains fit and competitive at his club.
The national team coach Jorge Jesus, who was reportedly in Leiria during the controversy, declined to comment directly on Ronaldo’s statement, saying only that he had "nothing to say." On October 4, after Portugal’s 2-1 victory over Norway, Jesus denied making any agreement with Ronaldo regarding a public explanation of the incident but indicated a willingness to consider the player’s return to the team.
The Portuguese Football Federation has not issued a comment on Ronaldo’s statement or the unfolding situation. The dispute brings into focus tensions within the national squad and raises questions about Ronaldo’s future participation with the team as Portugal continues its Nations League campaign.
