Jets general manager Darren Mougey addressed the media Wednesday on the opening day of training camp, offering insights into the team’s development as it prepares for the upcoming NFL season. Now in his second year with the organization, Mougey emphasized the benefits of familiarity and continuity within the Jets’ management and coaching staff.
“There’s a better comfort level going into Year 2,” Mougey noted, referring to his relationship with head coach Aaron Glenn, who is also entering his second season. Mougey explained that daily communication and spending more time working together has strengthened their alignment. Both men maintain high expectations for themselves, players, and coaches alike as they aim to improve the team’s performance.
When asked about the criteria for a successful season, Mougey was clear: “We want to win.” He added that the team’s focus is on competitiveness and steady progress, starting immediately with the training camp and continuing throughout the season.
On the roster front, Mougey confirmed that offseason contract extensions were secured with running back Breece Hall and guard Joe Tippmann but did not indicate any current plans to negotiate further deals. “I think we’re in a good spot right now, but I’ll always keep contract stuff in-house,” he said, declining to comment on potential additional negotiations.
The Jets appear poised to evaluate their quarterback depth, particularly at the backup position behind starter Geno Smith. Mougey expressed enthusiasm about watching young quarterbacks Cade Klubnik, Bailey Zappe, and Brady Cook compete during camp. While acknowledging speculation about adding a veteran backup through trade or free agency, Mougey refrained from discussing specific possibilities. “I’m just excited to see Cade get his reps during training camp and watch the whole group... develop and continue to improve,” he said.
Questions concerning Smith’s recent legal issues in Florida were met with limited comment from both Mougey and Glenn. Mougey stated that the team is focused on moving forward. “I’m excited about what’s moving forward, glad that’s behind us,” Mougey said, emphasizing the importance of growth during the offseason and training camp.
Glenn also voiced support for Smith, emphasizing the quarterback’s accountability and maturity. “I think he did a really good job of the awareness part of it,” Glenn said, referring to the impact of the off-field incident on the team’s momentum during the organized team activities (OTAs). “The thing about it is it’s behind him... He talked to me. He talked to some of his teammates. We’re with him 100 percent and we’re moving forward.”
