New York Jets wide receiver Adonai Mitchell is preparing to return to the field Sunday after missing four games with a finger injury. Mitchell, the team’s No. 2 receiver, spoke to the media Friday for the first time since sustaining the injury in late September but was unable to recall how the injury occurred or whether surgery was required.
“I really can’t even think back that far,” Mitchell said. “I’ve been so focused on what I want to do, which is to be back out there with the guys.” He also expressed surprise at how much time he missed but remained focused on his return.
Jets head coach Aaron Glenn initially listed Mitchell as day-to-day after the injury was reported on September 24, explaining that Mitchell had caught his finger in a teammate’s jersey. Mitchell missed the game against the Detroit Lions that same day. The team later disclosed that Mitchell underwent a minor procedure as part of his recovery.
Mitchell practiced fully on Friday and confirmed the finger is feeling strong when catching passes. “I feel great, man. I got 10 of them things. I’m just ready to ball with the guys,” he said.
The Jets hope Mitchell’s return will provide a boost to a struggling offense that has averaged just 18.7 points per game this season, ranking sixth-lowest in the league. Over the past three games, the offense has scored only four touchdowns. Before his injury, Mitchell was a key deep threat, catching nine passes for 123 yards in the team’s first two games, which saw a combined 40 points scored.
Mitchell’s return also coincides with rookie receiver Omar Cooper Jr. coming back from an ankle injury sustained in Week 1. Cooper debuted last Sunday against the New England Patriots, recording six catches for 103 yards and a touchdown. Quarterback Geno Smith highlighted the potential impact of having a healthy receiving corps, saying Mitchell, Garrett Wilson, and Cooper present a range of challenges for opposing defenses.
The Jets, currently holding a 2-4 record, face two home games against the Cleveland Browns and Las Vegas Raiders over the next two weeks. These matchups represent critical opportunities for the team to even their record at .500. Mitchell expressed his eagerness to contribute to wins moving forward. “I’m feeling great. I just want to help the team, contribute to some W’s. That’s all I’ve been thinking about,” he said.
