Three-time Vezina Trophy-winning goaltender Connor Hellebuyck has publicly requested a trade from the Winnipeg Jets, ending months of private discussions with the organization. The 33-year-old made the announcement Thursday through his agent, Ray Petkau, via social media.

Hellebuyck, who has spent his entire National Hockey League (NHL) career with the Jets since being drafted in the fifth round in 2012, stated that his desire to move on has remained unchanged. “I believe moving on is the best path forward for me and my family,” he said, expressing gratitude toward Winnipeg fans and expressing hope for a prompt resolution.

The announcement comes just weeks before the Jets’ preseason opener against the Edmonton Oilers on September 19, followed by the regular-season debut at home against the Boston Bruins on October 2.

Winnipeg Jets general manager Kevin Cheveldayoff acknowledged Hellebuyck’s trade request in a statement Thursday, noting the player’s openness about his intentions. Cheveldayoff emphasized Hellebuyck’s significant contributions to the franchise and said the team is continuing to explore options without providing further updates.

Hellebuyck is currently in the third year of a seven-year, $59.5 million contract extension signed in October 2023, which carries an average annual value of $8.5 million. Over his 11-year NHL career, he has registered a 345-208-44 record with a .916 save percentage and a 2.58 goals-against average (GAA) across 625 regular-season games. In 58 playoff starts, he holds a 24-34 record with a .903 save percentage and a 2.90 GAA.

A standout performer, Hellebuyck won the Vezina Trophy as the league’s top goaltender in the 2019-20, 2023-24, and 2024-25 seasons. He also earned the Hart Memorial Trophy as the National Hockey League’s most valuable player for the 2024-25 campaign. Additionally, he secured the William M. Jennings Trophy in the 2023-24 and 2024-25 seasons for allowing the fewest goals during the regular season.

Hellebuyck’s recent performance has been mixed. In the 2024-25 season, he led the NHL in GAA at 2.00, posting a 47-12-3 record with a .925 save percentage and eight shutouts over 63 games as the Jets captured the Presidents’ Trophy with the league’s best regular-season record (56-22-4). However, he struggled in the following season, finishing 23-23-11 with a 2.86 GAA and a career-low .895 save percentage across 57 games, as Winnipeg failed to qualify for the playoffs.

The Jets’ goaltending roster also includes Stuart Skinner, who joined the team on a two-year, $7.5 million deal signed in July, adding further depth behind Hellebuyck.

With training camp underway and the season approaching, the Jets face a pivotal period as they navigate the future of one of the league’s premier goaltenders.
