Ear cuffs, a form of jewelry that partially or fully encircles the ear without requiring piercings beyond the lobe, have gained notable prominence in high-end jewelry collections and on international red carpets in recent years. The resurgence of these adornments was highlighted in late May during Dior’s presentation of its Diorissima high jewelry collection in Venice, which featured 19 models showcasing designs that extended beyond traditional earlobes.

According to jewelry historian Marion Fasel, ear cuffs are defined as pieces with an opening that allows them to slide onto the ear, resembling a cuff worn on the wrist. However, the modern category encompasses a variety of styles including climbers that ascend the ear’s length, multi-component designs linked behind the ear, and floral or geometric cuffs positioned along the ear’s inner and outer edges.

The trend’s visibility at major events has bolstered its popularity. At the Cannes Film Festival earlier in May, actress Cate Blanchett wore a Louis Vuitton ear cuff from the Mythical collection paired with a black gown, featuring diamond-studded swirls connected behind the ear by a chain. Similarly, Rihanna’s appearance at the recent Met Gala included two notable earrings by Glenn Spiro alongside a double ear cuff made with inverted diamonds by Dyne of New York City. Dyne’s founder Saray Ysabel Narici noted that Rihanna’s stylist sought a contemporary aesthetic, selecting ear cuffs for their modern appeal and comfort.

Valérie Messika, who helms the Paris-based Messika brand, pointed to the enduring impact of the Calypso ear cuff worn by Kristen Stewart at Cannes in 2016. This design, featuring wave-like pear-shaped diamonds that appear to float without visible metal settings, exemplifies Messika’s goal to blend edgy, unconventional elements with fine jewelry. She said ear cuffs bring a rock ’n’ roll sensibility that challenges traditional earring norms and adds versatility to styling.

The use of ear cuffs is rooted in a long historical tradition spanning cultures and epochs. Nikita Binani, Sotheby’s jewelry sales head in London, traced elaborate ear adornments back to ancient Egypt and classical Greece, emphasizing their ceremonial and cultural significance, particularly in India. Indian jewelry from the 16th-century Mughal period and South Indian temple jewelry often encompassed the entire ear, incorporating distinctive gold kundan settings and designs worn during religious ceremonies.

Contemporary designers also draw from archaeological and ethnographic sources. Gaia Repossi of the Repossi brand, who holds a background in archaeology, cites inspiration from African desert tribes and ancient civilizations in crafting her family’s signature ear cuffs. Her meticulous approach to design, exemplified by her Serti sur Vide collection, involved engineering small clips to secure the pieces comfortably, likened to an “ear corset.”

The challenge of ensuring an optimal fit is central to ear cuff craftsmanship. Stéphanie Sivrière, Piaget’s director of jewelry, highlighted the importance of pressure, weight balance, and comfort to prevent slippage during everyday activities. Piaget has incorporated ear cuffs into its collections since the 1960s, often pairing asymmetric cuffs with classic earrings to enhance visual impact. Anne-Eva Geffroy, Graff’s design director, further explained the complexities in designing climbers that must accommodate diverse ear shapes, with precise positioning of posts critical to wearability.

Market demand, particularly among younger consumers, has propelled ear cuffs into mainstream interest. Beth Hannaway, director of fine jewelry and watches at Harrods, noted that established clientele also appreciate ear cuffs as a contemporary way to refresh their jewelry without requiring additional piercings. Tiffany Hsu, chief buying officer at luxury online retailer Mytheresa, described the charm of ear cuffs for customers who enjoy styling flexibility and curated ear looks.

London’s Robinson Pelham has responded to this trend through its Ear Menu, an interactive online tool that helps shoppers experiment with combining ear cuffs with traditional earrings. Creative director Vanessa Chilton affirmed that ear cuffs, whether worn alone or paired with other jewelry, serve to elevate overall style, underscoring their growing versatility and appeal in the modern accessory landscape.
